Gastroenterology
Your digestive health affects your daily living. When you suffer from a digestive or gastrointestinal disorder, it is often uncomfortable and difficult to concentrate on anything else. From diagnosis to treatment, the gastroenterology team at West Bend Clinic is committed to providing you with the highest level of care. We are experts in the treatment of disorders affecting the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, liver, gallbladder and pancreas.
The following are digestive conditions and disorders treated at West Bend Clinic:
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
GERD occurs when a muscle at the bottom of your esophagus does not close and backwashes, or refluxes, liquid from your stomach back into your esophagus.
Symptoms: If you experience acid indigestion and heartburn more than twice a week, you could have GERD. Over-the-counter medications may temporarily relieve symptoms but you continue to have the problem.
Treatment: Your doctor could prescribe medication to help control your GERD. In some cases, however, surgery is the best option.
Barrett’s Esophagus
Barrett’s esophagus is a complication resulting from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). People with this condition have an abnormal growth of stomach cells in the lower part of their esophagus. This movement of the stomach cells into the esophagus is probably the body’s defense against acid in the stomach from GERD. In some people, these cells could become cancerous.
Symptoms: Symptoms include long-term trouble with acid reflux, difficulty swallowing food and vomiting blood.
Treatment: While there is no cure for Barrett’s esophagus, you can slow its progression by making lifestyle changes to treat your GERD. These changes include:
- Eating smaller meals
- Elevating the head of your bed to keep acid in your stomach
- Avoiding eating within three hours of bedtime
- Losing weight and eating smaller amount of fatty foods
St. Joseph’s Hospital now offers the HALO ablation procedure, in which a doctor removes the dead tissue in your esophagus.
